The Lake District is famous for being the birthplace of rock climbing in Britain. Rock climbing now also features as an Olympic sport making its debut in the 2021 Olympic games. It is both a personal challenge and a chance to relax and be in the moment. We offer a variety of options to suit everyone, whether you are just starting out or want to get out and explore some of the best climbing or scrambling in Britain. 

 

Rock climbing venues 

Some of the popular venues we use are around the Langdale, Coniston, Ulverston, Central and Western Lakes areas. If you have a specific route or area in mind just contact us with details. We use a variety of local guides who know the Lake District well.

Rock Climbing
Half Day

Discover this fabulous sport.

This is a half-day rock climbing experience for those who have never been climbing before or for those wanting a taste of outdoor rock climbing. During this session you'll learn the basics of movement on rock, making your way to the top safety attached to a tight rope. You'll also be taught the basics of belaying under the supervision of our friendly instructors.

 

For those wanting a little more, we also offer full-days and skills courses for those wanting to learn to climb on their own and guided days for climbing routes in the mountains.

Suitable for: Age 5 upwards

Taster Rock Climbing

Full Day Rock Climbing

A fun day out on the rock.

Make the most of your time and spend a full day out enjoying Lake District Crags. This day is for beginners and improvers. If you've climbed a little indoors and want to experience rock for the first time, would like some movement coaching or have never climbed before and would like to take your time and enjoy a full day's experience - this is the day for you. Our experienced instructors will be on hand to ensure you have a safe and fun day.

 

This is a day of top-roped rock climbing in which you will be securely attached to a rope whilst climbing up. Check out our other courses for more advanced climbing days.

 

Suitable for: Age 5 upwards

Fitness Level: Moderate 

Duration: Full day - 6 hrs

Full Day Rock Climbing

Intro to Outdoor Rock Climbing

Transfer your indoor skills outdoors.

A 2-day course designed for those who have climbed indoors and want to transfer to climbing outdoors. You'll cover the basics of everything you'll need to progress with outdoor climbing.

 

This course is bespoke for you. Your instructor will help further develop your knowledge, and climbing techniques and cover as much as possible during the two days. Learn about:

  • Interpreting guidebooks, trad grades, routes and different types of rock.

  • Trad gear - what to use, why and when.

  • How to set up a top rope and use of anchors.

  • Receive coaching on different climbing techniques such as laybacks and hand jams.

Suitable for: Age 15 upwards

Fitness Level: Moderate 

Duration: 2 Full days

Learn to Lead Courses

Learn the techniques of Lead Climbing.

Are you ready to learn to lead or maybe transfer your indoor climbing skills to an outdoor environment? This course is a great introduction to lead climbing and covers the following areas:

  • Route choices, grades and venue choices.

  • Looking at different types of climbing equipment and understanding their uses.

  • How to place traditional protection such as nuts, hexes, and cams and which is appropriate.

  • Building belays, bringing up your second and how to keep yourself safe.

  • Coaching on different climbing techniques.

This course is bespoke for you. Your instructor will work with you to help you achieve your goals and will cover as much as possible during the two days.

Guided Rock Climbing 

Immerse yourself in the mountains.

Let us guide you up the best routes in the Lake District. Tick off big mountain routes on crags like Gimmer, Pillar Rock and Scafell or lower-level valley crags such as Wallabarrow, Shepards or Ravens Crag in Langdale. If you are not sure where you would like to climb we can tailor a day to suit you. 

 

If you'd like to improve your rope skills or would like climbing coaching we can do that too! Whatever you choose, our experienced local guides will tailor the day to suit your aims and ensure you have a fabulous day out.

Guided Scrambling

An exciting journey in the hills

Hire a guide and discover some of the Lake District's amazing graded scrambles.

 

Scrambling is a fantastic way to journey through the mountains and there are loads to choose from including some of the famous classics such as Pinnacle Ridge, Jack's Rake or Cam Crag Ridge.

 

Our guides are extremely knowledgeable so if you have a specific scramble that you would like to tick off we can take you there If you just want a fabulous day out but are unsure of where to go, let us tailor a day to suit you.

Duration: Full day

Guided Scrambling

What we offer:

Rock climbing courses and guided climbing and scrambling are bespoke and are for just you and your party.

 

We also offer taster days during which you may be part of a larger group. For taster days, if you would prefer a private session just let us know and we will accommodate you if we possibly can - please enquire about a price. We keep our ratios of instructor to clients low so you can have a fabulous and safe experience.

Taster days are available to book online from age 8 upwards. If you have a younger family please contact us to arrange a private session.

Please note: All under 18's must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

We provide:
  • Instruction from qualified and friendly local guides.

  • Specialist quality equipment. 

  • Harnesses to fit all sizes.

  • A selection of rock climbing shoes.

What to wear:

  • Sturdy trainers or boots

  • Rock shoes to climb in if you have your own.

  • Suitable comfortable and warm clothing for mountain weather.

  • A good set of waterproof trousers and jacket.

  • Bring snacks, lunch and water if you are with us for a full day.
